Description

BMW X1 E84, E87, E90,E91 N46n Engine Control Module ECU
BMW X1 E84, E87, E90,E91 N46n Engine Control Module ECU
  • Engine Generation: BMW N46N (N46 Technical Update / LCI revision, 2007–2015).

  • ECU Management System: Bosch Motronic MEV17.4.6 (also referenced as MEV1746 or MEV17.2.1 depending on hardware revision).

  • Processor Architecture: Infineon TriCore TC1796 micro-controller (uses modern Tricore boot/bench protocol rather than older BDM).

  • Key Structural Difference from N46: Unlike the earlier N46 engine ECU (Bosch ME9.2 / 0261208582), which used an external standalone Valvetronic control module (VVT unit), the N46N MEV17.4.6 ECU integrates the Valvetronic motor driver directly into the main DME unit.

Vehicle Compatibility

The N46N DME was fitted to facelift (LCI) models and markets where the direct-injected N43 engine was not introduced due to high-sulfur fuel content:

  • BMW 1 Series (E81 / E82 / E87 / E88): 118i (100 kW), 120i (115 kW / 156 hp) (2007–2013)

  • BMW 3 Series (E90 / E91 / E92 / E93): 318i, 320i (2007–2013)

  • BMW 5 Series (E60 / E61): 520i (2007–2010)

  • BMW X1 (E84): sDrive18i / xDrive18i (2009–2015)

  • BMW X3 (E83): 2.0i LCI (2007–2010)

Common Bosch / BMW Part Numbers (N46N MEV1746)

0 261 S05 947 7603575 / 7 603 575 E84 X1 / E90 320i N46N

Key N46 vs. N46N ECU Differences

  1. Hardware Incompatibility: You cannot swap an N46 ECU (ME9.2) into an N46N vehicle or vice versa. Cable harnesses, plug pinouts, and Valvetronic wiring configurations are entirely different.

  2. Immobilizer (CAS/EWS): The MEV1746 unit uses an anti-tamper ISN (Individual Serial Number) encrypted inside the Infineon TriCore chip. Replacing the ECU requires:

    • Option A: Full EEPROM/Flash cloning via bench tools (KTAG, Autohex, Flex, or VVDI Prog).

    • Option B: Resetting the ECU ISN to virgin state and matching it to the car’s CAS module using BMW ISTA / INPA tooling.
