BMW X5 3.0L Diesel Engine Intake Turbo Intercooler 17517805150.
The intercooler is responsible for reducing the air intake charge on turbocharged cars. When air is compressed it gets hot. That’s why turbocharged cars utilize an intake air charge cooler (intercooler) to exchange heat from the air after being compressed by the turbocharger and before entering the air intake. This style of intercooler is an air-to-air style intercooler which means it exchanges heat directly to the atmosphere.
For an air-to-air intercooler to operate efficiently it needs adequate air flow over its core. For that reason, it is mounted in front of your car and down low behind an air duct. Due to the location of the intercooler in the front of your BMW, it can easily get damaged. The cooling fins can get damaged or knocked off reducing efficiency and causing higher intake temperatures. This can result in a noticeable performance loss. The intercooler can also suffer from a punctured core which will cause boost leaks and power loss.
